My thoughts on today’s Education Scotland / Scottish Government ICT Summit in Stirling. An interesting discussion which will affect every learner in Scotland. Comments very welcome.
I spoke today about some of the transition work I had supported in Games Design in the Kincorth associated schools group. The primary teachers in Kirkhill, Loriston, Abbotswell and Charleston Primaries created some fantastic content with their learners. You can view my presentation about the project online at http://public.iwork.com/document/?a=p14600755&d=Games_Design_Transition.key Download the PDF of the slides [...]
Now back in the swing of things at school and using Glow again. But I frequently get the webgate.dll error (Oracle Bad Request you might sometimes see!). It happens when you log in and for some inexplicable reason are not forwarded to the Glow portal but land in a no-man’s land in between – with [...]
I recently spent a lot of time updating CompEdNet – the Scottish Forum for Computing Science Teachers. This post is a potted history of the site and a little information about what was involved in creating it’s most recent incarnation.
Ever since I entered teaching the debate on “How to teach programming” has been raging. It is still something that a great many of us struggle with. That struggle relates to our need to constantly revise, rework and redefine our approaches to programming and software development with our learners. I’ve lost count of how many [...]
An opinion piece of the future of Computing in Scottish schools and ideas about how to take it forward. “I’m a computing teacher. I love it! I came into teaching after a few years in the IT industry and I loved the challenge and the opportunity to teach new things to learners and really show how technology can be used to create exciting things. From memory computing departments started to crop up in schools around 1984 and most schools had established a department by 1988. I started teaching in 1992 and at that time things like word processing, spreadsheets, databases and programming were all the rage. New software applications and, for most learners, the first experience they had of using a computer. It was an exciting time and there was a huge interest in the subject. In the minds of many parents it was THE subject that their child HAD to take….”
I like Windows 7 but every now and then I want an Apple Mac. It’s a bit like wanting a MacDonalds when you just normally head to Burger King! It must be something in the sauce…Anyway, as you know Mac OS X doesn’t run out of the box on PC hardware (and it’s even more difficult on the AMD Phenom processor which I have – for Intel it’s a little easier). Now you could go and spend hours Googling, formatting hard drives, trying drivers, patches, hacks etc. to get Mac OS X to function on your Windows PC or you can do it the easy way…I like easy
Would you like a winter snow effect on your Glow page(s)? You can now add falling snowflakes using this web part. Download it and then import it into your Glow page. Place it anywhere on the page and it will work. Enjoy! Tweet This Post
I spent a few minutes getting the XBox 360 Controller to work on MacOS 10.6. This is a quick summary.
I’ve just finished editing, creating new icons and digitally signing the toolbars for Internet Explorer and Firefox. These are now correct signed so won’t present any major problems when installing. I’ve also developed web based installers for both and an executable installation for windows – again all digitally signed!
